Therapy vs. Coaching: Which is the Right Avenue For You?

Therapy and coaching are inherently different. Think of them as two separate and unique approaches to achieving social-emotional wellness goals. Because they serve distinct purposes, some folks might need help in choosing the right service for their unique needs:

  • Therapy focuses on healing and treating mental health related symptoms and concerns. It helps clients process past experiences, manage emotional pain, and address mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Therapy often involves diagnosis, treatment plan development and treating psychological issues to restore well-being. There are many different kinds of mental health professionals who have been trained and educated differently (counselors, psychologist, clinical social workers, etc). These individuals offer unique specializations and are trained utilizing specific therapeutic modalities. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I take a Holistic approach, seeing clients within the context of their environments and intersecting identities. Options for therapy include billing through insurance or opting for cash-pay.

  • Coaching is forward-focused and action-oriented. It supports clients in achieving personal and emotional growth, setting and reaching goals, and navigating life transitions. Coaching does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions but empowers clients to thrive through self-awareness, resilience, and actionable strategies. Coaching services are uniquely tailored to each individual client depending on their goals; we can address self-esteem, how to feel more empowered in career or work-life balance, mindfulness coaching, etc. Coaching services cannot be billed through insurance.

By offering both services, I ensure that clients receive the right support for their unique journey. Let’s explore what works best for you!
